GSM Fabric Weight Explained (for Apparel Brands)

GSM comes up in every fabric conversation, spec sheet, and supplier quote — and it's one of the simplest ways to talk about quality. Here's what it means and the ranges to know for the apparel you're likely to make.

    Typical GSM Ranges

    Hoodie / sweat240–280280–340340+

    Notes

GSM = grams per square meter. It's literally how much a square meter of the fabric weighs. Higher GSM means denser, heavier, usually more durable and opaque fabric. It's not the only quality factor, but it's the fastest single number to compare two fabrics.

Heavier isn't always better. The right GSM depends on the garment and season. A 180 GSM summer tee would feel wrong at 300; a 220 GSM 'hoodie' would feel thin. Match GSM to the use, not to a 'more is better' instinct.

GSM affects cost and shipping. Heavier fabric uses more material, so it usually costs more per unit and weighs more to ship. When you compare supplier quotes, compare at the same GSM — a cheaper price on a lighter fabric isn't really cheaper.

Publish it when it's a selling point. If you've chosen a premium heavyweight fabric, say the GSM on the product page — informed customers use it as a quality signal, and it sets accurate expectations that reduce disappointment and returns.

    FAQs

What does GSM mean in fabric?

GSM stands for grams per square meter — the weight of a square meter of the fabric. Higher GSM means a denser, heavier, usually more durable and opaque material. It's a quick way to compare fabric quality and set expectations for feel.

What is a good GSM for a t-shirt?

Around 150–180 GSM is the midweight everyday standard for tees. Below that (130–150) feels light and summery; above 180 feels heavyweight and premium. The best choice depends on your season, price point, and the feel you want to sell.

Does higher GSM mean better quality?

Higher GSM usually means denser and more durable fabric, but 'better' depends on the garment and purpose — a summer tee shouldn't be as heavy as a hoodie. Match GSM to the use case rather than assuming heavier is always better.
