Made-to-Measure vs Made-to-Order vs Bespoke (Shopify Guide)
“Made-to-order,” “made-to-measure,” and “bespoke” get used interchangeably, but they're three different products with different margins, lead times, and fulfillment. Here's exactly how they differ — and how to sell each on Shopify.
The Three Models Compared
| Model | Fit basis | Lead time | Typical premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Made-to-order | Standard sizes, cut on demand | 1–2 weeks | 10–25% |
| Made-to-measure | Customer's measurements on a base pattern | 2–4 weeks | 30–60% |
| Bespoke | Pattern from scratch + fittings | 4–8 weeks | 2–5× |
Notes
Made-to-order (MTO) means the garment is produced after the order is placed, but in your standard sizes. There's no per-customer measurement — you're cutting to your normal size chart, just on demand. It reduces overstock and is the easiest of the three to run on Shopify.
Made-to-measure (MTM) takes the customer's own measurements and adjusts a base pattern to fit them. This is where fit returns essentially disappear, because the garment is built to the buyer. It needs a measurement form on the product page that captures the data and attaches it to the order.
Bespoke is the premium tier: a pattern drafted from scratch, usually with one or more fittings. It commands the highest price and the longest lead time, and the order/measurement side lives on Shopify while the fittings happen off-platform.
Which should you sell? Start with made-to-order if you just want to cut overstock. Move to made-to-measure when fit returns are your real problem and you can charge a premium for a perfect fit. Reserve bespoke for high-touch, high-margin brands that can handle fittings.
How to set it up: all three need a way to capture custom input (measurements, style choices) as a product option tied to the order. See the made-to-order pillar for the no-code setup.
FAQs
What's the difference between made-to-order and made-to-measure?
Made-to-order produces your standard sizes on demand after purchase, with no per-customer measurement. Made-to-measure adjusts a base pattern to the customer's own measurements, so it fits them specifically and virtually eliminates fit returns.
Is made-to-measure the same as bespoke?
No. Made-to-measure adjusts an existing base pattern to a customer's measurements. Bespoke drafts a pattern from scratch, usually with multiple fittings, and costs and takes considerably more.
Which is best for reducing returns?
Made-to-measure and bespoke both build the garment to the customer's measurements, so fit-related returns nearly vanish. Made-to-order alone doesn't reduce fit returns because it still uses standard sizes.
How do I sell made-to-measure on Shopify?
Add a custom measurement option to the product page that captures the customer's measurements and ties them to the order, then make the garment to that spec. Tailor Size Guide does this with no theme code.
