How to Measure Your Bust for Women's Tops and Dresses
Measure your bust accurately at home in under 2 minutes. Includes bra-on vs bra-off guidance, common mistakes, and a size chart.
Your bust measurement is the single most important number when buying women's clothing online. Get it wrong by half an inch and a $200 dress arrives tight across the chest, gaping at the waist, or both. Get it right and you skip the return, the reshipping, and the hour lost at the post office.
This guide takes under 2 minutes. No bra drama, no guessing, no ordering two sizes to "see which fits." Just the right number, the first time.
What You Need
Three things.
- A soft measuring tape. The fabric kind, not the metal one from the toolbox.
- A mirror. Full length if you have one, bathroom if you do not.
- A decision about the bra (we will get to that in a second).
No soft tape?
How to Measure Your Bust in 4 Steps
Stand up straight
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest
Keep the tape snug, not tight
Read the number at the end of a normal exhale
Write the number down in both inches and centimetres. Most international brands list sizes in centimetres.
Bra On or Bra Off? The Real Answer
It depends on what you are buying.
Tops, dresses, most casual wear
Measure with the bra you will actually wear under the garment. If that is a regular T-shirt bra, wear that. If you plan to go braless, measure braless.
Bridal and formal gowns
Measure with the bra you plan to wear on the day, or without a bra if the gown is built-in. Mention this in the order notes if the brand asks.
Swimwear, activewear, bodysuits
Measure braless.
Why it matters
Upper Bust, Full Bust, Under Bust: Three Different Numbers
Most women only know one bust measurement. Some garments need two or three. Here is the difference.
Full bust
The number you just took. Across the fullest part, usually the nipple line. This is what most dress and top charts use.
Upper bust
Measured just under the armpits, above the breast tissue. This matters for structured tops, corsets, and bridalwear where the fit around the chest above the bust matters more than the bust itself.
Under bust (band)
Right under the breasts where a bra band sits. Used for bras, corsets, and bustier-style tops.
If a product page asks for all three, measure all three. If it only asks for full bust, that is enough.
Common Mistakes That Ruin the Fit
Measuring over a thick sweater
Adds 2 to 4 inches. Measure in a bra or a thin top only.
Holding the tape too tight
Cuts into the skin, gives you a number 1 to 2 inches smaller than reality. You end up with a garment that will not close.
Tape sloping up in the back
Makes the number smaller than it should be. Check in the mirror that the tape sits level all the way around.
Measuring after a big meal or a workout
Your chest expands when you are bloated and contracts when you are dehydrated. Measure first thing in the morning, before coffee, for the most consistent reading.
Rounding up "to be safe"
Size charts are built on exact measurements, not guesses. If you measure 35.5 inches, write 35.5. Do not round to 36.
Measuring once and trusting it forever
Your bust changes with weight, pregnancy, age, hormones, and menstrual cycle. Remeasure at least once a year if you shop often.
Women's Bust Size Chart (General Reference)
Different brands use different charts. This is a general reference for most US and UK women's clothing. Always check the brand's own size chart before ordering.
| Size (US) | Size (UK) | Size (EU) | Bust (inches) | Bust (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XS / 0–2 | 4–6 | 32–34 | 31–33" | 79–84 cm |
| S / 4–6 | 8–10 | 36–38 | 33–35" | 84–89 cm |
| M / 8–10 | 12–14 | 40–42 | 35–37" | 89–94 cm |
| L / 12–14 | 16–18 | 44–46 | 37–40" | 94–102 cm |
| XL / 16–18 | 20–22 | 48–50 | 40–43" | 102–109 cm |
| XXL / 20–22 | 24–26 | 52–54 | 43–46" | 109–117 cm |
If your measurement sits between two sizes, two rules of thumb. For structured pieces like blazers, corsets, and fitted dresses, size up. For stretchy knitwear and flowy tops, size down.
What to Do With Your Measurement
Once you have the number, three paths.
- Compare to the brand's size chart on the product page. Every serious brand lists bust measurements in a size chart or a "Size Guide" button near the product images.
- Enter it in a custom measurement form. If the brand offers made-to-order or custom tailoring, you will see a form on the product page asking for bust, waist, and other measurements. Fill it in exactly as you measured — do not round. Stores using Tailor Size Guide guide you through each field with diagrams.
- Contact the brand if you are between sizes. A quick email, WhatsApp, or DM to a small brand often gets you specific advice. They want the sale, and they want it to fit. Especially at higher price points, ask.
FAQs
Should I measure in inches or centimetres?
Both. US and UK brands use inches. European, Asian, and most online made-to-order brands use centimetres. Have both written down.
What if my bust is uneven?
Most women's are. Measure the larger side and use that number. A well-fitting garment on the larger side will look fine on the smaller.
My bust says I am one size and my waist says another. Which wins?
For tops, dresses, and anything fitted through the chest, bust wins. Order by bust and alter the waist if needed. Alterations on the waist are cheap and common. Letting out a chest is hard or impossible.
Does this work for strapless tops and dresses?
Yes, but also measure your upper bust. Strapless construction relies on the fit above the breast, not just around it.
How often should I remeasure?
Once a year minimum. More often if your weight has shifted, you have been pregnant, or you are shopping at higher price points where the cost of a return is real.
Do bras affect the size I should order in a dress?
Yes, if the dress is fitted through the chest. Measure in the bra you plan to wear. For dresses with built-in cups, measure braless.
