Women's Jeans Size Chart (US, UK, EU, AU) with Fit Guide

Two parallel sizing systems, vanity sizing, rise variations — women's denim is the most confusing category in apparel. Here's the chart that decodes all of it, plus fit-by-cut and brand-specific calibration.

A US size 4 at one denim brand is a 26-inch waist. A size 4 at another is a 28-inch waist. A size 4 at a third is labeled W27 with no number. Same body, three different labels.

Women's jeans sizing is the most confusing in apparel. Two systems run in parallel (US numerical sizes from 00 to 22, and W-sizes that use the waist circumference in inches), brands vanity-size differently, and the rise of the jean changes which number actually fits.

This guide decodes all of it. The full women's jeans size chart, US to UK to EU to AU conversions, the difference between numbered sizes and W-sizes, and fit-by-cut sizing rules for skinny, straight, bootcut, mom, boyfriend, and wide-leg jeans. Plus the brand-specific calibration that makes the chart actually useful.

    How Women's Jeans Sizes Work

Women's jeans use two sizing systems at the same time.

    Numbered sizes (US)

    00, 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 22. These are the same numbers as women's dress sizes. Most American mass-market denim uses this system.

    W-sizes (premium, European, Japanese)

W23, W24, W25, W26, W27, W28, W29, W30, W31, W32. The number is the waist circumference in inches. Designer denim, raw denim, and most non-American brands use this.

The two systems coexist. A pair of jeans labeled "size 6" might also be labeled "W27" on a different brand. Both refer to the same body waist measurement.

    How to Use the Chart

    1

Measure your waist where the jeans will sit

For mid-rise and high-rise jeans, this is your natural waist. For low-rise jeans, this is 1 to 2 inches below your natural waist.

    2

Measure your hips at the fullest point

The widest part of your lower body, usually 7 to 9 inches below the natural waist.

    3

Cross-reference both numbers in the chart

Your size is wherever both fall in the same row.

Waist and hips in different rows? Go by the larger

Tailor down at the waist if needed. This is the rule for most pear-shaped and curvy bodies.

Why Hip-to-Waist Ratio Breaks the Chart for Many Women

Standard jeans charts assume your waist is roughly 10 to 11 inches smaller than your hips. This is the "average" hourglass ratio.

Most women don't fit this ratio.

Pear shape (waist much smaller than hips)

Your hip number puts you 1 to 2 sizes bigger than your waist. Order by hip, tailor the waist.

Athletic / straight (waist close to hip)

Your waist number puts you 1 to 2 sizes bigger than your hip. Order by waist.

Curvy (waist much smaller than hips, more so than average)

May need to order 2 sizes up to fit hips, then heavily tailor waist. Or look for "curvy fit" lines from brands like Levi's and Madewell.

    Plus size

Most plus-size denim uses a ratio that better fits the average plus-size body, but variations still exist between brands.

Same brand fails repeatedly? It's the ratio, not your size

If you are between brands and one consistently fits while another consistently fails, the issue is usually the brand's hip-to-waist ratio, not your size. Switch to brands that publish "curvy" or "straight" sub-ranges for your body type.

    Vanity Sizing in Women's Jeans

Vanity sizing in women's jeans is real and widespread.

    A 1990s "size 4" was a 26-inch waist. Today, a "size 4" at most American brands is a 27 to 28-inch waist. Bodies didn't change. Labels did.

    Different brands vanity-size differently:

    • American mass-market (Old Navy, Gap, J.Crew): run roughly 1 inch larger in the waist than the labeled W-size. A size 4 fits a 27 to 28-inch waist.
    • Designer (Citizens of Humanity, Mother, AGOLDE): run closer to true W-size. A size 27 fits a 27-inch waist.
    • Madewell: uses W-sizes directly. Generally true to label.
    • Reformation, Frame: run slim. Order one W-size up if you are between two sizes.
    • Levi's Premium and 501: run roughly 1 inch larger than label. Size down for a fitted look.
    • European brands (Acne, COS, Sandro): run small. Order 1 size up from your US size.
    • Japanese repro denim: runs exact to label. No vanity. Buy at body waist.

When in doubt, search recent reviews of the specific style for "true to size," "runs small," or "runs large."

    Fit-by-Cut: Same Size, Different Fits

The same numerical size fits differently depending on cut.

    Skinny

Tightest. Tapers from waist to ankle. Match your body waist exactly. Athletic builds may need to size up by 1 in the waist to accommodate thigh muscle.

    Straight

Same width from thigh to hem. Forgiving. Match your body waist. Works for most body types.

    Slim straight

Slim through the leg, straight at the hem. A blend. Match your body waist.

    Bootcut

Slim at the thigh, slight flare at the hem to fit over boots. Match your body waist. Add 1 inch to the inseam since the flare reads as longer.

    Flare and wide-leg

Wider through the leg, often dramatic flare or wide opening at the hem. Designed to balance fuller hips. Match your hip number, not your waist. Tailor the waist if needed.

    Mom jeans

High-rise, relaxed through the hip and thigh, tapered at the ankle. Most "mom" cuts run roomy through the hip and thigh. Order at your true waist size.

    Boyfriend and girlfriend

Loose throughout, designed for an oversized look. Order 1 size down for a relaxed look, 2 sizes down for a true masculine cut. Stays true to label otherwise.

    Cropped and ankle

Designed to end above the ankle bone. Inseam runs 26 to 28 inches typically. Match your waist size. Confirm the inseam length on the product page since "cropped" varies dramatically.

    High-Rise vs Mid-Rise vs Low-Rise

    • High-rise (10 to 12 inch front rise): sits at or above the natural waist. Use natural waist measurement.
    • Mid-rise (8 to 10 inch front rise): sits below the natural waist, above the hip. Most common rise.
    • Low-rise (6 to 8 inch front rise): sits at the hip. Use hip measurement, not waist.

Same W-number, different rise = different fit

A pair of high-rise jeans labeled W28 fits differently from a low-rise jean labeled W28. Same waist number, different placement on the body.

    Brand-Specific Calibration

    • Levi's 501 Original (women's): runs 1 inch larger than label. Size down.
    • Levi's Wedgie, Ribcage: runs true to label. Match body waist.
    • Citizens of Humanity, Mother, AGOLDE: designer, runs true to W-size labels.
    • Madewell: true to label. Has separate "curvy" line for hip-heavy bodies.
    • Lucky Brand, AG: run 0.5 to 1 inch larger than label.
    • Express, Abercrombie: run roomy. Size down if between two sizes.
    • Reformation, Frame: run slim. Size up if between two sizes.
    • Free People: runs 1 size larger than label. Size down.
    • Zara, H&M: European sizing. Generally smaller than American sizing at the same label.
    • Uniqlo, Muji: Asian sizing. Runs small. Size up by 1 to 2.

Five Mistakes That Wreck Women's Jeans Sizing

Buying by the size you "always wear"

Vanity sizing changes year by year and brand by brand. Always re-measure.

    Ignoring the rise

A high-rise W28 fits a different waist than a low-rise W28. Match the rise to the right body measurement.

    Going by waist only

Hip measurement matters as much as waist for most cuts. Measure both.

    Forgetting fabric content

100% cotton denim runs tighter at first and stretches over wear. Stretch denim (1 to 4% elastane) fits closer to the labeled size at all times.

    Trusting the model photos

Models wear sample sizes (typically 25 to 26) and are styled to make the jeans look perfect. Photos predict style, not fit.

When to Size Up vs. Size Down

    • Skinny and tight cuts: size up if between two sizes. Tight skinny jeans pinch the waist.
    • Straight, bootcut, flare: match exactly. These cuts are forgiving in either direction.
    • Mom, boyfriend, wide-leg: size down if between two sizes. These cuts are designed to be loose.
    • Raw denim: size at body waist or 0.5 below. Stretches over time.
    • Cropped or ankle: match your waist. Confirm inseam length separately.

    FAQs

Why are my jeans suddenly too small?

Three options. Weight gain. Hot wash shrinkage. Or a new pair from a brand that vanity-sizes less than your previous brand.

Should I size by waist or hip?

For most cuts, waist. For wide-leg, flare, and pear-shaped bodies, hip. If both don't match the same row, go by the larger number and tailor.

My jeans button but feel uncomfortable. Wrong size?

Borderline. Either size up by 1, or stick with your size if the jeans have stretch. Comfort fit should leave half an inch of room at the waistband.

    What is "curvy fit" denim?

Curvy fit is cut for a hip-to-waist ratio of 13+ inches (vs the standard 10 to 11). Brands like Levi's, Madewell, and Old Navy publish curvy lines that fit fuller hips without gaping at the waist.

How does jean size compare to dress size?

For most American brands, jean size matches dress size in name (a size 4 dress and a size 4 jean), but the cut is different. The chart numbers correspond.

What is the difference between US numerical sizes and W-sizes?

US numerical sizes (00, 0, 2, 4, 6, 8...) match dress sizes and are common in American mass-market denim. W-sizes use the waist circumference in inches (W23, W26, W29, W32...) and are common in designer, raw, and non-American denim. Both systems describe the same body waist.

Save Your Numbers, Ignore the Label

Three numbers are all you need to shop women's jeans online.

    • Body waist (where the jeans actually sit)
    • Hip circumference
    • Inseam (from a pair that fits)

Plus your hip-to-waist ratio (subtract waist from hip) and your preferred cut.

Match against the brand's specific chart, factor in vanity sizing notes, and the next pair of jeans you buy lands at your front door fitting like they were made for you. Stores running Tailor Size Guide let shoppers save these numbers and reuse them across every jean in the store.
