Men's Pants Size Chart: Waist, Inseam, and International Conversions
Two numbers — waist and inseam — solve men's pants sizing for chinos, dress pants, work pants, and joggers. Here's the full chart from W28 to W46, the inseam-to-height map, and the US/UK/EU/JP conversions.
Men's pants are the easiest sizing category in apparel. The waist is your waist; the inseam is your inseam. The number on the tag matches your body within an inch. The hard part isn't the math — it's matching the rise (where the waistband sits) and cut (slim, regular, relaxed) to your build.

Rise and Where It Sits
| Rise | Where it sits | Front rise (typical) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| High rise | Natural waist | 12–13" | Vintage, tucked shirts, formal |
| Mid rise | 1–2" below navel | 10–11" | Most common, contemporary |
| Low rise | On hip bones | 8–9" | Casual, dated 2000s look |
| Very low rise | Below hip bones | 7–8" | Rare in men's |
The same labeled W34 in low-rise jeans and high-rise chinos fits very differently. Low-rise W34 sits at hip; high-rise W34 sits at natural waist (which for most men is 1–2\" smaller than hip). Same number on label = different relationship to body.

Common Mistakes
Trusting the labeled waist as exact body waist
Mass-market US pants run 0.5–1\" larger than the label. Designer pants run truer. Always check the brand's actual waistband measurement.
Buying low-rise sized to natural waist
A W34 low-rise pant that sits on the hips needs to be the size of your hip — usually W36 if your hip is 36. Reading "W34" and assuming it means natural waist 34 leads to pants that fall down.
Ignoring stretch content
4% spandex pants run 0.5–1 inch smaller than the label and stretch to fit. 100% cotton pants run true. Same labeled W34 fits differently in stretch vs rigid.
Buying long inseam to hem down
Most pants come with limited hem allowance (1.5–2"). If you need a 30 inseam, buy a 30 — don't buy 32 expecting to hem 2". Some constructions can't be hemmed at all (jogger cuffs, raw-edge denim).
FAQs
How are men's pants sized?
By waist in inches (W) and inseam in inches (L). 34x32 = 34 waist, 32 inseam.
What's the difference between W and the size number on dress pants?
Dress pants use waist-only labeling. Casual uses waist × inseam.
Should I buy by waist or hip?
By waist. Hip is a cross-check.
What inseam should I buy?
Match your inseam measurement. 32 = regular (5'8–6'0). 34 = long (6'0–6'2).
How do US men's pants convert to EU?
US + 10. US 32 ≈ EU 42.
Why do pants fit differently across brands at the same waist size?
Rise, cut, and brand calibration vary. Always check the brand's chart.
