    L (inseam)

    The second number, usually 28 to 36 in inches. The length of the inner leg seam from crotch to hem.

    A jeans labeled W32xL34 means a 32-inch waist with a 34-inch inseam. Some brands write it as 32/34 or just 32x34. Same thing.

    European brands often skip the W/L format and use a single combined number, or list waist in cm only.

    W30

    30-inch waist measurement at the buttoned waistband. Roughly 76 cm. Usually fits a body waist of 30 to 31 inches because most modern jeans add 0.5 to 1 inch of vanity to the labeled waist.

    L32

    32-inch inseam, measured from crotch seam to hem. Roughly 81 cm. Fits men 5'9" to 5'11" most commonly.

    US and UK

    Identical for jeans in most cases. UK brands sometimes label waist without the "W" prefix.

    EU

    EU jeans sizes for men are usually 8 to 10 numbers higher than the US waist. US W32 = EU 42 to 44 depending on cut. EU brands sometimes also add an inseam number like EU 42/L32.

    Japan and Asia

    Japanese denim often uses the waist in cm directly with no inseam pair. A "76 cm" Japanese tag is roughly US W30. Japanese sizes also tend to run smaller in the seat and thigh than US sizes at the same waist label, so add half a size if you are buying Japanese denim.

    Italian and French denim

    May use cm waist labels (76, 81, 86, 91) without an L number. Inseam is assumed standard or expected to be tailored.

    Vanity Sizing in Men's Jeans

    Vanity sizing is real in men's jeans, just less obvious than in women's clothing.

    A 1990s "W32" pair of Levi's actually fit a 32-inch waist. A 2025 "W32" pair of Levi's fits roughly a 33 to 33.5-inch waist. The brand quietly added 1 to 1.5 inches to the labeled waist to make customers feel better about their size.
