Every hat size starts with one number: head circumference at the spot the hat sits. That spot is half an inch above your eyebrows, going around your head at the widest point above your ears.
That circumference number translates into different labels depending on the hat type:
- Fitted caps use fractional inches (6 7/8, 7, 7 1/8, etc.) which are head diameter, not circumference.
- Letter-sized hats (beanies, bucket hats, snapbacks) use S, M, L, XL, XXL.
- European hats (fedoras, dress hats, panama hats) use head circumference in centimeters.
- One-size hats assume average head circumference (typically 22 to 23 inches).

Five Mistakes That Wreck Hat Sizing
Measuring over hair
Long hair worn up, thick hair in a bun, or a hat already on your head adds 0.5 to 1 inch easily. Hair down, no other hat.
Ignoring head shape
Round vs. oval matters as much as circumference for structured hats. If a hat fits in circumference but pinches the temples, your head shape doesn't match the hat's shape.
Trusting "one size fits all"
This means 22 to 22.5 inches. Outside that range, you need a sized hat.
Buying European fedoras without converting
EU 58 is not US 58. Use the cm column.
Sizing up to "leave room"
Hats are not jeans. A hat with extra room slides down your forehead and looks wrong. Match the chart precisely.
When to Size Up vs. Size Down
Default: size up if between sizes for structured hats.
