A waistcoat (vest) is sized by chest, the same number as a suit jacket, and should sit close to the body over a shirt. Front length matters too — a waistcoat must cover the waistband with no shirt or belt peeking out.

Match your suit or chest size. A waistcoat should be the same chest number as your jacket — a 40 jacket takes a 40 waistcoat. If you're buying it standalone, measure your chest at the fullest point and use that number.
It must cover the waistband. The cardinal rule: a waistcoat should just cover your trouser waistband so no shirt shows between the vest and trousers when you stand. That's why front length is on the chart — too short is the most common waistcoat error.
Use the back strap for the waist. Most waistcoats have an adjustable back strap, so you fit the chest and cinch the waist with the buckle. Don't size down for a snug waist — set the chest right and tighten the strap.
