US to UK women's clothing: just add 4
For women's tops, dresses, and bottoms, the US-to-UK conversion is a flat +4. A US 0 is a UK 4, a US 4 is a UK 8, a US 6 is a UK 10, a US 8 is a UK 12, and it continues up in twos. To go from UK back to US, subtract 4. This is the single most-searched conversion because a UK 10 (US 6) is the most common women's size in Britain.
US to UK shoe sizes are different from clothing
Shoes don't use the +4 rule. Women's shoes convert with UK = US − 2, so a US 8 shoe is a UK 6 and a US 6 shoe is a UK 4. Men's shoes are much closer: UK = US − 0.5, so a US 10 men's shoe is a UK 9.5. If you only remember one thing: never apply the clothing formula to footwear.
Men's clothing: US and UK are basically identical
Men's shirts, suits, and jackets use the same numeric chest sizing in the US and UK — a 40 is a 40 in both. Letter sizes (S/M/L) also match. The only meaningful men's difference is shoes (−0.5). So for a US men's shopper buying UK menswear, your usual size is your size.
What W30, W32 and jeans waist labels mean
Jeans use the waist measurement in inches, and it's the same in the US and UK. W30 simply means a 30-inch waist; W32 is 32 inches. The L number (e.g. L32) is the inside-leg length. Because it's a physical measurement, there's no US-to-UK conversion for the waist itself — a men's W30 is a W30 on both sides of the Atlantic. Women's jeans that use a W label map roughly to US 8–10 / UK 12 at W30.
