Best Running Shoes by Gait Type
Running gait determines shoe selection. Heel strikers need cushioned heels + higher drops. Midfoot/forefoot strikers need lower drops + flexible forefoot.
The Chart
| Gait Type | Drop Height | Best Shoe Style |
|---|---|---|
| Heel striker | 10-12mm | Stability or max-cushion (Brooks, Hoka) |
| Midfoot striker | 6-8mm | Neutral cushion (Saucony Endorphin, Nike Pegasus) |
| Forefoot striker | 0-4mm | Low-drop or zero-drop (Altra, Hoka Speedgoat) |
| Mixed (variable) | 4-8mm | Moderate stability + cushion |
FAQs
How do I find my gait?
Run on a treadmill while videoing your stride from behind. Watch where foot first hits ground. Heel strikers see heel contact first; midfoot strikers see whole foot land flat; forefoot strikers see ball of foot first. Specialty running stores often offer this analysis free.
Should I change my gait?
Generally no. Try gait change only with coaching and slow transition. Forced gait changes increase injury risk. Stick with your natural gait + the right shoe for it.
