How to Measure Your Wrist for a Bracelet (Bangle, Cuff, Tennis)

A bracelet isn't a watch. The wrist measurement is the same, but the ease you add depends on the style — chain, tennis, cuff, and bangle each call for a different number. Here's how to size each.

You bought a tennis bracelet in your "wrist size" and it ended up tight against your wrist bone. Or a bangle that never made it past your knuckles. Or a cuff that pinched. The wrist measurement was right; the ease for the bracelet style was wrong.

Each bracelet style has a different relationship between wrist circumference and the bracelet's listed size. Here's how to take the measurement, and how to convert it to a buy-able number for each style.

    Step-by-Step: Measure Your Wrist

    1. Pick the wrist you'll wear the bracelet on. Usually the non-dominant hand.
    2. Wrap a soft tape just below the wrist bone. Bracelets sit on the lower forearm, not over the prominent ulnar styloid bone.
    3. Tape snug, not tight. One finger should slip between tape and skin without resistance.
    4. Read on a normal exhale. No flexing or pulling.
    5. No tape? Use a strip of paper. Wrap, mark where it overlaps, lay flat, measure with a ruler.

    The number you just got

That's your wrist circumference. It's not yet your bracelet size — keep reading for the per-style adjustment.

The "standard" column is what most jewelry brands list as the bracelet length on their charts. For the size to order, find your wrist row, then choose the column that matches your preferred fit feel.

    Each Style, Decoded

    Chain bracelet

Wrist + 0.5–1.0". Sits flat against your wrist with a small drape. Most flexible style for slight wrist-size variation; stretches over the day with body heat.

    Tennis bracelet (linked stones)

Wrist + 0.25–0.5". Sized closer than a chain because the stones are heavier and you don't want them rotating to the underside. Slight drape OK; full flop is wrong size.

    Cuff bracelet (open)

Wrist circumference − 0.5–1.0" (the opening is what slips over the wrist; the rest is rigid). Cuff brands often list "inside circumference" — that's the number to compare to your wrist. A cuff with inside circumference 6.5" fits a 7.0" wrist with a 0.5" gap.

    Bangle (closed, rigid)

Don't use wrist circumference. Use the closed-hand circumference: tuck thumb into your palm and measure the widest point of your hand. Bangle's inside diameter must be ≥ that number / π. Easier rule: bangle's inside diameter (in inches) × 3.14 ≥ your closed hand's widest circumference. Standard sizes: S = 2.5\" inside diameter, M = 2.625\", L = 2.75\", XL = 2.875\".

    Charm bracelet

Sized like a chain (wrist + 0.75–1\"). Extra ease lets the charms hang off the back rather than digging in.

    Friendship / cord / leather

Wrist + 0.5–1.0", same as chain. Cord stretches slightly over time, so err on the snug side.

    Common Mistakes

Using watch wrist size as bracelet wrist size

Same measurement, different ease. A watch fits close (0.25–0.5\" of ease); a chain bracelet drapes (0.5–1\"). If you wear a 7.5\" watch strap, you wear an 8\"+ chain bracelet.

    Measuring over the wrist bone

The wrist bone (ulnar styloid) protrudes. Measuring over it gives a number 0.25–0.5" too high. Drop just below it for the slimmer measurement.

Using bangle inside circumference instead of closed-hand size

Bangles slip over your hand, not your wrist. The hand at its widest (knuckles + tucked thumb) is bigger than your wrist. Size for the hand, not the wrist.

Sizing tennis bracelets like chain bracelets

Tennis bracelets are heavier and rotate if too loose. Tighter fit (wrist + 0.25–0.5\") keeps the stones face-up.

    FAQs

How do I measure my wrist for a bracelet?

Wrap a soft tape (or paper strip) around your wrist just below the wrist bone. Read the circumference. Add 0.5–1 inch for chain or tennis bracelets.

What is a typical wrist size?

Adult women average 6.0–7.0 inches. Adult men average 7.0–8.0 inches.

Is wrist size for a bracelet the same as for a watch?

Same measurement, different ease added. Watch: +0.25–0.5". Chain bracelet: +0.5–1".

How do I size a bangle?

Make a fist with your thumb tucked in. Measure the widest part. The bangle's inside diameter must be slightly larger than that.

How do I size a cuff bracelet?

Measure wrist, subtract 0.5–1 inch — that's the cuff's inside circumference you should buy.

Should I measure morning or evening?

Wrists swell slightly over the day. Mid-morning gives an average reading.
