Brannock Device Explained
Brannock device = the metal heel-to-toe foot measurer in every US shoe store. Measures three dimensions: heel-to-toe length, heel-to-ball length, foot width. Each maps to a shoe size.
The Chart
| Brannock Reading | What It Measures | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Heel to longest toe | Foot length | Numeric size (US 9) |
| Heel to ball of foot | Where shoe needs to flex | Same numeric or +/- 0.5 |
| Width slider at ball | Forefoot width | Letter (A narrow → EE wide) |
| Arch length | Heel to ball of foot | Determines if to size up for arch |
Notes
Charles Brannock invented the device in 1927 in Syracuse, New York. Still made today by the Brannock Device Company. Standard sizing tool in US shoe retail. Also exists in metric (cm) and women's-specific versions. Take the LARGER of the two length readings (heel-to-toe vs heel-to-ball) as your size.
FAQs
How accurate is the Brannock?
Very accurate when used correctly: bare or thin-socked foot, full weight on the device, foot fully flat. Many fitters use it incorrectly (foot half-on, casual posture) — measure yourself if possible.
Brannock vs Mondopoint?
Mondopoint = mm precision. Brannock = US shoe size precision (1/2 size = 4.2mm). Mondopoint is more precise. Brannock is universal in US retail. Both reliable when used correctly.
