Pinchmark vs Bar Lug Helmet Sizing

Motorcycle helmets sized two ways. Pinchmark = head circumference at brow. Bar lug = head shape (round, intermediate oval, long oval). Both matter for proper fit.

    The Chart

    MethodWhat It MeasuresWhy It Matters
Pinchmark (circumference)Around head 1" above eyebrowsDetermines size: S/M/L/XL
Bar lug (head shape)Front-back vs side-side ratioDetermines model: round, intermediate oval, long oval

    Notes

Even with right circumference (S/M/L/XL), wrong head shape = pressure points + helmet shifting. Round head + intermediate-oval helmet = pressure on temples. Intermediate-oval head + long-oval helmet = forehead pressure. Get fitted in person first time, then know your head shape for future online buys.

    FAQs

How do I know my head shape?

Look in the mirror from above. Round = nearly equal front-back vs side-side. Intermediate oval (most common) = front-back slightly longer. Long oval = front-back significantly longer. Most US helmets are intermediate oval. European brands often round.

    Brand head shape differences?

Shoei = intermediate oval (RF series) or round (RJ). Arai = round to intermediate. Bell = intermediate. AGV = round. HJC and Scorpion = intermediate. Snell certification doesn't dictate shape.
