How to Measure Children's Feet for Shoes (Wriggly-Toddler Edition)

A child's foot moves the moment you put a tape on it. Skip the tape. Use paper, pencil, and 60 seconds of standing-still — that's how you measure feet that don't want to be measured.

    The 60-Second Method (Standing)

    1. Tape two A4 sheets to a hard floor. One for each foot. Carpet compresses; use tile or laminate.
    2. Heels against a wall or chair leg. Standing, not sitting. Both feet bearing weight.
    3. Mark the back of each heel and tip of each longest toe. Pencil perpendicular to paper. The longest toe is often the second toe in children.
    4. Measure between marks in mm. Each foot separately.
    5. Use the larger foot's number. Plus 6mm growing room.

    Make it a game

Kids stand still longer when they have a job. "Stand really tall" or "be a statue for 5 seconds" gets better measurements than "stop wiggling."

    When to Replace Shoes

Toes touch the front of the shoe. No thumb-width gap = too small.
Red marks at the end of the day. Pressure points across the ball or top of foot.
Child takes off shoes more than usual. Tells you they're uncomfortable.
Dragging feet or new walking awkwardness. Shoes interfering with gait.
Visible wear pattern shifted. Wear concentrated at the toe area = pushing forward.

    Common Mistakes

    Measuring while sitting

Sitting reduces foot length 2-4mm vs standing. Always have the child stand with body weight on the feet.

Buying by age, not foot length

Children of the same age can be 2 shoe sizes apart. Always measure foot length, not calendar age.

Sizing up a full size for growth

Causes the heel to slip — actively unsafe for new walkers and active kids. Half a size up max; replace every 3 months instead.

    Skipping width on chunky-foot kids

Some kids have wide feet from age 1. Measure ball width and look for wide-width brands (Stride Rite, See Kai Run, New Balance).

    FAQs

How do I measure my child's feet at home?

Tape paper to a hard floor. Have the child stand on it. Mark heel and longest toe. Measure in mm. Use larger foot, add 6mm growing room.

    How often should I remeasure?

Every 2-3 months under age 6. Every 3-4 months ages 6-12. Faster during growth spurts.

What's the difference between US, UK, EU kids' sizes?

UK runs 0.5 smaller than US. EU sizes by cm directly.

Should I size up for growing children?

Half a size, not full. A full size up causes slipping.

How do I know when my child needs new shoes?

No thumb-width gap, red marks, frequent shoe-removal, dragging feet.

Does my child need wide shoes?

Possibly. Measure ball-of-foot width and compare to brand chart.

Five Minutes Saves Three Pairs of Wrong Shoes

Quick foot-tracing every 2-3 months solves most kids' shoe-buying frustration. Save the measurements with date stamps so you can predict the next size before they outgrow.
