How to Measure for Ski Boots (Mondopoint Sizing Decoded)

Ski boots ignore your US/UK/EU shoe size entirely. They use Mondopoint — your foot's length in centimeters, full stop. Here's how to measure it, plus width and flex.

Mondopoint = Your Foot in cm

    The single rule

Mondopoint (Mondo) = foot length in centimeters. A 26.5 cm foot wears Mondo 26.5 ski boots. No conversion, no clearance, no half-size up.

Stand on paper, mark heel + longest toe, measure between marks in cm. The number you read IS your boot size. Most ski boots are sized in 0.5 Mondo increments (24, 24.5, 25, 25.5, etc.).

Last Width — The Second Number

    Last widthFit typeBest for

    98-100mmPerformanceAdvanced skiers, athletic stance
    100-102mmAll-mountainMost skiers, intermediate to advanced
    102-104mmComfortRecreational, beginner, casual
    104-106mmWideWide foot, all-day comfort priority

Most brands publish the last width on each model. Ball-of-foot pain after 2-3 hours of skiing usually means the last is too narrow.

    Flex Rating by Skill Level

    FlexSkill levelDescription
60-80BeginnerSoft, easy to flex, very forgiving
    80-100IntermediateBalanced; suits parallel turns + all-mountain
100-120AdvancedStiffer; rewards good technique, less forgiving
    120-140ExpertRace-stiff; demands expert technique

Flex differs between men's and women's boots — women's flex is often 10-20 lower at the same skill level due to typically lighter rider weight.

    Common Mistakes

Buying ski boots in your street shoe size

Different system entirely. Always measure foot in cm and use Mondopoint.

Buying too-stiff boots for skill level

Wrong-flex boots cause leg pain and inhibit progression. Match flex to your actual skill, not aspirations.

    Ignoring last width

Foot pain in correctly-sized Mondo = wrong last width. Try narrower or wider last.

Buying boots that feel comfortable on day 1

New ski boots SHOULD feel snug. Pads pack out — comfortable day 1 = loose by day 5.

    FAQs

    What is Mondopoint sizing?

Foot length in centimeters. Direct, no conversion.

Are ski boots the same size as my street shoes?

No — Mondo is your bare foot length, no clearance.

    Should ski boots feel snug?

Yes — toes JUST brush the front standing, pull back when flexed.

What flex rating do I need?

    Beginner: 60-80. Intermediate: 80-100. Advanced: 100-120. Expert: 120+.

How do I measure ski boot width?

Ball-of-foot in mm. Standard last is 100-102mm.

Should I size down for performance?

Only if expert/race level. Recreational skiers buy true-to-Mondo.

Mondo and width get you in the right ballpark. For competitive skiing, see a certified boot-fitter — custom footbeds and shell punching can take a stock boot from "fits OK" to "feels custom" for a few hundred dollars.
