How to Measure for Dance Shoes (Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Pointe)

Five disciplines, five different fits. Ballet slippers run 1-2 down. Pointe shoes are custom. Tap fits close to street. Here's the per-style sizing guide.

    Step-by-Step

    1. Wear what you'll dance in. Tights for ballet, jazz socks for jazz, sheer hose for ballroom.
    2. Stand on paper, heel against wall. Both feet weight-bearing.
    3. Mark heel and longest toe. Measure in mm.
    4. Find your street shoe size. See our foot guide.
    5. Apply the discipline-specific adjustment.
    6. Order multiple sizes if online. Dance shoe fit is unforgiving; trial is essential.

    Pointe Shoes — Always Custom-Fit

Never order pointe shoes online without prior fitting

Pointe shoes bear full body weight on the toes. A wrong fit causes serious injury including stress fractures, ankle sprains, and toe deformity. Visit a certified pointe-shoe fitter before any pointe purchase.

Pointe fitters assess foot shape (Egyptian, Greek, Roman), arch, flexibility, and strength. They recommend specific brands and shanks (hard, medium, soft) based on your foot. Most ballet schools require a fitting receipt before students can wear pointe shoes.

    Common Mistakes

Ordering pointe shoes online without fitting

Causes injury. Always see a certified fitter.

Buying ballet slippers in your shoe size

Way too big. Ballet runs 1-2 down.

    Sizing up for kids

Half a size max. Loose dance shoes prevent technique development.

    Skipping hosiery during measurement

Tights add 0.25-0.5 size. Always measure with the hosiery you'll dance in.
