    How to Measure for Shapewear

Shapewear has one rule that breaks 80% of buyers: don't size down. Here's the right way to measure and which size to actually buy.

    The Single Rule

    Never size down for shapewear

Sizing down causes rolling, bulges at edges, breathing problems, and visible compression lines. Shapewear is engineered to compress AT your size — buy your actual size and let the garment do the work.

    The Three Measurements

    1. Stand naturally. Don't suck in. Shapewear is engineered for relaxed body posture.
    2. Measure bust at fullest, parallel to floor.
    3. Measure waist at natural waist (narrowest, ~1\" above belly button).
    4. Measure hip at fullest part of seat.
    5. Use the LARGEST relative to the brand's chart. Always go up if between sizes.

    Brand-Specific Notes

    Spanx

Runs small at the upper boundary of each size. A Spanx M fits the lower-bust + lower-waist + lower-hip end of the M chart. If you're at the higher end of any measurement for M, go up to L.

    Skims

Runs true to chart. Letter sizing is more forgiving than Spanx — measurements at the high end of M still fit M comfortably.

    Wacoal / Bali

Traditional shapewear. Runs slightly larger than modern Skims/Spanx. Suits older sizing intuition.

    Honeylove

Engineered for breathability. Runs true to chart. Specifically targets bra-replacement bodysuits.

    Yummie

Mid-tier compression. Runs slightly larger than Spanx — most users buy 1 size smaller in Yummie than in Spanx.

    Common Mistakes

    Sizing down for tighter compression

Causes rolling, bulges, breathing problems. Buy true size.

    Sucking in while measuring

Gives a smaller waist reading; garment will be too tight.

    Treating Spanx M = Skims M = Wacoal M

Each brand cuts differently. Always check the specific brand's chart.

    Wearing shapewear past elasticity life

After 6-12 months, compression weakens. Replace.
