Measure your waist where the shorts sit. Board shorts sit lower than dress trousers, so measure around where you actually wear them — usually at or just below the natural waist — and match the inch number. If you're between sizes and the waist is fixed (not elastic), size up.
Outseam sets the length. Outseam (waistband to hem) decides whether shorts hit above or below the knee. Shorter outseams (17–18") sit mid-thigh; longer (20"+) reach the knee. Pick by the look you want, not just the waist.
Little stretch means less forgiveness. Traditional board shorts are woven with minimal stretch, so a waist that's too small won't 'give.' Hybrid and swim-walk shorts with elastane are more forgiving if you're unsure between two sizes.
