The elastic waist buys you a size of give. Because most joggers have a stretch or drawcord waist, the waist column is forgiving — the hip and thigh usually decide the real fit. If your hips are fuller than your waist suggests, size to the hip.
Taper changes the leg fit, not the size. Slim/tapered joggers hug the calf and ankle; relaxed joggers hang straight. Same labelled size can look very different, so read whether a style is tapered before assuming it'll be slim or roomy.
Inseam plus cuff sets the break. Joggers are meant to end at the ankle with the cuff gathering slightly. If you're tall, check the inseam — a short inseam turns a jogger into an unintended crop.
