How to Measure for a Winter Parka

Parkas are engineered for layering — base + mid + parka. Measure with the mid-layer ON, not just a t-shirt. That's the rule that prevents a parka that's too tight in February.

    The Layered Measurement Method

    1. Wear your winter base + mid-layer. Long sleeve base + fleece or down sweater = your typical winter rig.
    2. Measure chest over those layers. Tape parallel to floor, snug.
    3. Measure sleeve over layers. Shoulder bone over slightly bent elbow to wrist.
    4. Measure back length from nape to where you want hem.
    5. Don't size up beyond your measured chest. Parkas are pre-engineered for layering.

    Common Mistakes

Measuring chest in just a t-shirt

Gives a too-small parka for actual layered wear.

    Sizing up for extra warmth

Parkas are insulated by their construction. Extra room = cold air pockets.

    Buying down for wet climates

Down is useless when wet. Get synthetic if you face rain or heavy sweat.

    Skipping hood adjustment

Hood must cinch to follow head movement. Loose hood = wind in face.

    FAQs

    Size up for parka layering?

No — parkas are pre-engineered for it.

    What length is right?

Short, mid, long, expedition — match to climate.

    What temperature rating?

    Above 0°F: 700+ fill. Below -10°F: 850+ fill expedition.

    Down vs synthetic?

Down: warmer per oz, useless wet. Synthetic: works wet.

    How should hood fit?

Snug, follows head, cinches against wind.

    How long does parka last?

    Quality 8-15 years. Mid-tier 4-7 years.
