How to Measure for a Leather Jacket
Leather stretches 0.5-1 inch with wear. Buy snug, break in. Here's how to measure correctly the first time — because a too-loose leather jacket can't be tailored back to fit.
The Snug-First Rule
Buy snug, break in
Exception: shoulder fit. Shoulder seam falls AT the corner of your shoulder bone, day one — that dimension doesn't stretch. If shoulder is loose, the jacket is the wrong size.
Measure with T-Shirt Only
- Wear a t-shirt or thin shirt. Leather jackets are NOT engineered for layering over thick sweaters.
- Chest: wrap tape around fullest chest. Snug. Parallel to floor.
- Shoulder: seam-to-seam across the back, shoulder bone to shoulder bone.
- Sleeve: shoulder over slight elbow bend to wrist. Leather sleeves can't be lengthened — get this right.
- Length: nape of neck to where you want hem. Biker: cropped. Bomber: hip. Field: longer hip. Trench-style: thigh.

| Bomber | Slim, ribbed cuffs | Waist length |
| Field / Racer | Slim-regular, 4 pockets | Hip length |
| Café racer | Slim, minimal hardware | Hip length |
| Trench-style | Slim-regular, often belted | Mid-thigh |
| Aviator / Shearling | Generous, sheepskin lining | Hip |

Quality Indicators
| Type | Quality | Lifespan | Price tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full-grain leather | Highest | 20-30+ years | $$ |
| Top-grain leather | High | 15-25 years | $$ |
| Genuine leather (just leather) | Mid | 5-10 years | $ |
| Bonded leather (scraps) | Low | 2-5 years | $ |
| PU / Faux leather | Variable | 1-3 years | $ |
Common Mistakes
Buying loose because it'll stretch
Stretches 0.5-1\" in chest. Loose new = falling-off-shoulders later.
Sizing up for sweater layering
Leather isn't designed for it. Buy a wool jacket if heavy layering needed.
Buying with loose shoulders
Shoulder doesn't stretch. Loose shoulder = always loose.
Ignoring leather quality
Bonded leather degrades in 2-5 years. Spend more for top-grain.
