How to Measure for Cycling Kit (Jersey + Bib Shorts)

Cycling kit fits in cycling posture, not standing. Snug = aero. Loose = flapping fabric and shifted chamois. Here's how to measure for jersey + bib shorts.

    Cycling Fit Levels

    FitTightnessBest for
    RecreationalSnug, comfortableCasual riding, commuting
    ClubAero-snug, body-followingGroup rides, sportive
    ProVery tight, skin-followingPerformance riding
    RaceSuper-tight, compressionCompetition, time trials

    Measure in Cycling Posture

    1. Chest: lean slightly forward as on a bike. Tape around fullest chest. This captures the riding-posture chest expansion.
    2. Waist + Hip: standing, parallel to floor. Hip especially important for bib shorts.
    3. Inseam: measure with knee slightly bent. Cycling inseam is ~1\" shorter than walking inseam.
    4. Sleeve (jersey): shoulder over slightly bent elbow to wrist.

    Brand Sizing Notes

    Castelli

Italian, runs small. Often size up if borderline. Race-cut runs tight; recreational cut is more forgiving.

    Rapha

Premium British. Runs true to chart. Multiple cuts: Classic (most forgiving), Pro Team (very tight), EF (race).

    Specialized

US brand. Runs slightly larger than European brands. Size down if between.

    Assos

Swiss premium. True to chart. Long-distance and competitive cuts have different fits — check the model.

    Pearl Izumi

US mid-range. Runs slightly large. Most forgiving among mainstream brands.

    The Chamois Decision

Bib short pads (chamois) are not interchangeable. Different brands use different anatomical shapes:

Men's anatomical: shaped for sit-bone position + male anatomy.
Women's anatomical: shaped for wider sit-bone spacing + female anatomy.
Long-distance: denser, more cushion, multi-density foam.
    Race: minimalist, lightweight, less cushion.
Endurance: middle ground — balanced density and cushion.

    Common Mistakes

Buying jersey in your casual chest size

Cycling jersey is cut for forward-lean. Casual chest sizing = baggy on bike.

    Sizing up bib shorts

Causes pad shifting and chafing. Always size down or true-to-size.

Buying men's pad for female rider (or vice versa)

Anatomical mismatch causes pain. Always buy gender-appropriate chamois.

    Wearing underwear under bib shorts

Chamois is engineered to be next-to-skin. Underwear causes chafing and friction.
